Fear and Laughing...

I experience life as an art-maker to be the best life imaginable. Even if I had pursued engineering, law, physics, math, chemistry, business, or parenting (as vocations like many in my family), I probably would be doing it still in an avant-garde sort of way - Running across towns and country on my motorcycle, making friends wherever they are, confronting my fears and laughing with people in all sorts of circumstances when we realize we're more in-common than we first realized.

My biggest fear was that if I chose one thing to be, I'd have to forfeit all the rest. The plain truth is that I've gotten tickets and met judges while contesting them and even joked and had a great time talking with the secretary in the lobby or the guy who checks your keys at the door. I've had wisdom teeth removed here in my thirties and been seen by doctors and nurses, completely at the mercy of their expertise. I've mixed materials for my own art experiments and discovered a few things amidst lots of wrong hypothesis in my creative laboratory. Since leaving my childhood behind, I've been shown I've got amazing nieces and nephews (and now-parents-themselves-siblings!) who have given me the opportunity to feel my nurturing influence for others.  Some of them even email me and tell me they admire me! Oh my god I can't tell you how I would never have though THAT would happen!

Simply, running around doing my art and really visiting my own life, connects me with all these people I'd never thought I'd 'get to be' if I decided on being 'just' and artist. So the fear of being 'strange' or 'out-of-place' is quite funny, of course - In retrospect.

Everybody draws. I thought once I was the only one. I think my real contribution to art is helping others be inspired about their own talent - Helping them see that they really have an artistic side to them, and whatever goes on inside of their day, nothing and no one can take away from them an opportunity to express their passion.

I feel bad that I ran out of cards to give away to people with little prints of my art on them. So, until I make more prints - Tonight I will be thinking of everyone who I met today, hoping that somehow the day made up plenty for whatever I wasn't able to add to it!
