I grew up in a very Catholic family, in an even Catholic-er city. And the Saints are everywhere.
There's a saint for:
Driving Safely.
Crossing the Street.
Visiting Foreign Lands.
Expediting Apologies to God.
Making Sure God Doesn't Know What You Did in Las Vegas.
Squeaky Cupboard Hinges.
Slippery Floors, Crying Babies, -
The list goes on.
Out of the myriad, the one who stood out to me the most was Saint Francis of Assisi.
The stories of Saints usually give two parts of their lives, the part where they are often born into shady circumstances, and could easily put on their business cards, 'Riff Raff,' 'Tom-Foolery,' or various other types of 'Shenanigans' common folk of their (usually lower class) are subject-to in older, less civilized times.
Then, there's some sort of 'Awakening,' but that's seldom gotten-into. We usually have the Saint 'suddenly transformed,' and now their business card reads 'Miracle Worker,' 'The-One-To-Call-On,' 'Mister (or Misses) Clean,' and so forth.
Saint Francis is peculiar to me because the things on his business card, after his 'Awakening' were quite down-to-earth, like:
*) Living on very little if any financial substance
*) Being relatively considerate of others in not-so-comfortable circumstances
*) Caring for the sick at a time being sick and socialized medicine didn't co-exist
*) The ability to withstand the tyrades of his other-minded dad
*) The talking to animals thing.
He's the patron saint of animals now. Meaning, if you have a pet hamster that's sick, or a cat who's recently gotten into a scrap (my own) and has a hole in his ear, - Well, you pray to Saint Francis.
But the story of Saint Francis never gets into the time of his life between his riff-raffy days and the days of his Awakening. That's where my painting picks up.
My painting is of the Woman, I claim, who met Francis along his route going to War, and did something to him that changed his mind so deeply that his life was forever changed. In the painting she is demonstrating to the soon to be 'Saint' Francis how to 'Talk to Animals,' by calling a bird to her hand, telepathically, of course.
I made this painting to say, through the subject of the teacher and the bird, and you and me as the viewer - That animals and the way we consider them, are the first clues to communicating with the world around us, so that we may be Awake and Humane in all of our affairs - With all Life-Forms.
